Is homework worth it?

There are positives and negatives to doing homework. Some of the positives are that the parents know how their child is getting on with the work and if the child is silently suffering they can help them. Another positive would be that it would improve skills like time management and the knowledge of how long an assignment might take i.e. an essay will be a lot shorter than a project. This is so important as it’s not the greatest idea to leave it to the last minute!

 There are also negative effects of doing homework. If a lot of homework is designated for a specific day and it all comes without warning, it might prevent the child from doing an after-school sport. Another negative would be that it adds to the child’s stress levels, as sometimes when you deal with different teachers for different subjects they can sometimes overlap on classroom tests or project deadlines.

I personally believe that homework is worthwhile. It helps the teacher to get through the work faster in class and by doing homework you go over that new information later, so if you don’t understand what went on it will be obvious when you hand homework in. It also makes you go over the work so when you come to study for Christmas and Summer exams it should be slightly easier. Also, I feel the skills that you learn from homework i.e. time management, answering techniques which are vital skills which would not be learnt so easily otherwise.

Most students would rather not go to school if they had the chance to pick but that was not the case with Malala Yousafzai. In 2009 Malala started to write a blog with her Dad for the BBC about what her student life was like growing up and learning in Pakistan for a girl. Even through Malala and her Dad received many threats concerning their lives, all they ever did was speak the truth about her life. In 2011 Malala was awarded “Pakistan’s first national youth peace prize” this lead her into lots of trouble with the Taliban leaders and they voted to have her killed. This is crazy to think about; the Taliban’s were so worried about a kid speaking about school that they wanted to kill her.

On the 9^th of October 2012, there vote nearly came through. Malala and her friends were traveling home from school when their bus got stopped by a masked gunman, they shot Malala with one bullet to the brain, the bullet also went through her neck and shoulder. She was not the only one that was injured in the shooting two of her friends were also injured during it. Malala somehow survived the shooting and she was only allowed to leave hospital in January 2013. This shooting rocked the world and even changed a right in Pakistan. The right was “to free and compulsory education”

What you need to complete a homework?

You need lots of different pieces of equipment to complete different assignments and different homework’s from each class. If you think about it, you would need a calculator for maths but you would never need it for English, another example would be that you need coloured pencils for art and geography but you would rarely, if ever, need them for history. Another important item would be your homework journal; this journal records each piece of homework required by the teacher and the designated completion date. The correct books brought home is also another obvious requirement. Possibly the most important requirement though would be the knowledge learnt in class to understand the exercise so you can do it correctly when at home.

Everyone has different approaches to completing homework, some people have different approaches to doing homework from different teachers. Some of the approaches to homework are as follows; there are people that do it straight away when the get home and then they have the rest of the day of to relax, another approach would be to come home and then relax until after dinner then they work late into the night to get the homework completed, another approach to doing homework would be in the morning of when it is due. Doing homework straight away is a sign of been organised and planed, but doing homework in the morning that it is due is a sign of being un-organised and adds to your stress levels. In my opinion the best and most efficient way to do homework is to do it straight away when you get into your house.

The definition of homework is “schoolwork that a pupil is required to do at home”.

A teacher would normally request that their homework should be done and completed for their next lesson that you have together. In primary school homework is given to students to show their parents so they know how their child is getting on in class, how they are coping with the work they are doing in school and the child learns how to cope with homework. This then gets the students ready for homework that they will receive in secondary school. In secondary school, homework is given to get through the course in more depth. The teacher would teach you how to do it in class and then he/ she will set you an assignment to carry out at home that is to do with the work that they just learnt that day.

 

Roberto Nevilis was the first teacher to ever give out homework, he did this in the year 1095. There might have been someone to have done this before him, but he was the first to be recorded doing so.
